What are Matrimonial Frauds?
With new era comes a new type of crimes. Example of such crime is matrimonial frauds. As the name itself suggests, matrimonial frauds are those types of fraud which are committed under the pretext of marriage. Under this crime women sometimes get sexually abused and are economically exploited. Generally women fall victim to such types of crime, they being in a vulnerable position. Matrimonial frauds are on rise and this is because of advent of new technology (matrimonial websites displaying prospective grooms and brides). This doesn’t mean that there were no matrimonial frauds before introduction of technology. It’s just that they are rising due to use of technology which makes the search easy.
What does it include?
Matrimonial fraud includes cheating for extracting money and sexual assault. for example, a woman in Hyderabad was cheated for rupees 14 lakhs; A 24-year-old man was arrested from south Delhi’s Neb Sarai on May 20, 2017 for sexually assaulting women, whom he had contacted on a matrimonial website, and cheating them of their money.
Why are they dangerous?
Matrimonial frauds are the worst form of crimes as they not only cause economic losses to the victim but also cause mental stress to the victim. Matrimonial frauds may also cause the victim to lose trust in the marriage system which can in turn damage the backbone of society. Trust is basic when it comes to relationship be it personal or financial and even in relation to society. Nothing can progress without trust, and which can halts the progress of not only the individual but also the society. If peace and stability is to be achieved in the society matrimonial frauds are to be addressed properly.
Laws governing Matrimonial Frauds:
Matrimonial frauds can be effectively dealt with under Indian Penal Code, 1860, under section 415, s. 416, S. 417, S. 419. If the matrimonial fraud is committed online, then Information Technology Act, 2000 can be opted to. We can thus see that matrimonial frauds are effectively addressed to by the Indian laws.
